City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan) visited Southeast Queens Friday for a tour of Queens Cancer Center at Queens Hospital in Jamaica. Councilmen James Gennaro (D-Fresh Meadows) and David Weprin (D-Hollis) joined Quinn on the tour, which according to Gennaro's office, was arranged to “introduce the Council Speaker to the vital diagnostic and treatment services” offered at the cancer center.
“This is one of the city's finest cancer care facilities,” Gennaro said in a statement. “(QCC) leads the fight against cancer with some of the most innovative diagnostics and treatments in medicine today.”
The tour was led by Dr. Margaret Kemeny, QCC's director and Antonio Martin and Chris Constantino, executive directors of Queens and Elmhurst Hospital Centers. Former Borough President Claire Shulman also attended the tour.
During the tour, the elected officials were introduced to the center's full diagnostic and treatment services, which begin with cancer prevention and early detection.
In January, Queens Hospital kicked off “Queens Campaign Against Cancer,” an effort to stress the importance of early detection of cancer to the Queens community.
