Proceeds from the Silent Auction at the Top 10 Women in Business event will be donated to the Hospice Care Network, which offers care and comfort to people in the final stages of life and their loved ones.
One of the largest hospice organizations in New York State, the Hospice Care Network tends to the needs of about 300 people daily in Queens and Long Island. The Network was recently formed in 1996, when Hospice of South Shore, Hospice Care of Long Island and Hospice Care of Queens merged, but the facilities have served patients individually since 1988.
The Hospice Care Network allows patients in the final stages of life to spend quality time with their family and friends either in the comfort of their own home, in a nursing home, in a freestanding facility or a hospital, all the while receiving healthcare and counseling.
Comprised of physicians, nurses, home health aids, chaplains, social workers, bereavement counselors, nutritionists, and trained volunteers, the staff of the Hospice Care Network aims to make a difference in the lives of patients and their loved ones by providing the highest quality comfort and care. A member of the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, the Network is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
With services ranging from the Prenatal Program, where parents cope with giving birth to a child with a life-threatening disease, to the Pediatric Hospice Program, which helps nurture the child as they undergo the physical challenges of being sick, every aspect of life-threatening diseases is addressed.
Bereavement counseling is also available for every age group whether or not the person’s loved one was treated with hospice care. Every year the Network hosts a bereavement camp for children, bringing the kids to fun places like the circus and allowing them to make new friends.
The Queens Courier hopes to raise a large amount of money for the Hospice Care Network at the auction, but the facility also is in need of volunteers to provide friendship and compassion to those in the last stages of their life. Caring individuals, who are interested in working with patients with terminal illness are urged to contact, the Office of Volunteer Services at 718-746-6142 ext. 404.
