IMMIGRANT HISTORY WEEK: Meet your neighbors

As part of the second Immigrant History Week, which runs from April 17 to April 23, the borough of Queens, home to people from practically every country in the world who speak some 138 different languages, will celebrate their ethnic diversity through a series of events here in Queens.
Immigrant History Week was created in 2004 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg as “a tribute to our common heritage and the contributions of immigrants in the City of New York.”
During the week-long celebration, the community will have plenty of opportunities to learn about different cultures. Below is a list of the events going on throughout the borough.
Throughout the week, Queens Council on the Arts will be presenting “Children’s Introduction to American Immigration” at their facility, which is located at One Forest Park. On April 17, The Greek Museum and the Center for Greek Heritage will present a photo slide show entitled “Our Story, Our People: the Greek American Experience.” It will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Broadway Library, located at 40-20 Broadway. LaGuardia Community College, located at 31-10 Thomson Avenue, will present Filipinos in the United States in the Main Theatre on April 20 beginning at 7 p.m. This event will include music, dancing and will address how Filipino immigrants fit into American history. Also on April 20, a discussion entitled “A Night of Cyber-Yugo” will be held at the Broadway Community Library, located at 40-20 Broadway, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Panelists will discuss the experiences of Western Balkans immigrants. For more information, call (718) 784-9121.
The Chinese Cultural Promotion Association of America will host “Bridging Cultures” on April 22 beginning at 2 p.m. The event, which will take place at the Flushing Library at 41-17 Main Street, will include a poetry recital and folk songs being sung in Chinese, Italian and English. “Americans in Turbans: An Inside Look at NYC SIKHS” will be held at the Queens Central Library, located at 89-11 Merrick Boulevard, on April 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will include a photo gallery, film shorts and Bhangra show. “Images of Home: Reclaiming Our Immigrant Past and Present,” which is made up of work by members of the South Asian Youth Action, will be on display Sunday, April 23 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Queens Museum of Art’s, located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
