York hosts summer jazz and art program

York College’s College Now Program, will again be offering the Summer Jazz and Art Institute, a free 5-to-6 college credit program, open to all New York City public high school sophomores and juniors.
Eligible students will study art history and the principles of color or jazz history, performance and improvisation with professional musicians and artists teaching college level courses. The program runs for six weeks beginning July 5 and ending August 10 with classes scheduled from Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Students can enroll in either a music section or a visual arts section. The program culminates with a performance in August incorporating the talents of both the art and music students. To qualify, students must be able to read music and have a basic understanding of their instrument or have a talent for painting or drawing. Horn players are strongly encouraged to apply. Vocalists are welcome as well. Metrocards and lunch vouchers will be provided.
