Councilwoman Melinda Katz has called upon Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein to repeal the ban on cell phones in NYC schools and replace the out-dated ban with an acceptable cell phone policy.
Katz believes that the ban on cell phones in schools has caused great concern among parents. She has spoken to many parents who rely heavily upon this technology in knowing that in case of an emergency their child can reach out to them.
“It is the responsibility of the government and its elected officials to develop policies that conform to advances in technology,” said Katz. “We must meet each challenge presented by these advances with intelligence, integrity and resolve. It is important that parents are assured that their children remain safe while we are entrusted with their security.”
The councilwoman is confident that New York City can set the standard for other cities by creating a policy that protects the educational integrity of schools and still allows for the utilization of cell phones.
