CAMPAIGN 2006 Community activist runs for Smith’s senate seat

After being a voice in the community for many years, Liz Bishop-Goldsmith has decided to run for a New York State Senate seat in the 10th district, which is currently led by Senator Ada Smith.
“I’m just a community activist [who’s] very concerned about the issues and everything that’s going on in the community,” she said.
Bishop-Goldsmith is the founder and president of Mothers Against Guns, Inc., making her mission to ensure that children and those who would use guns for criminal activity cannot obtain them. Last year, the New York City Council passed a piece of legislation proposed by Bishop-Goldsmith that increased the age to buy a rifle or shotgun to 21 while also increasing the restrictions for buying ammunition. The same bill is currently waiting to be looked at by the Assembly and Senate.
Other ways that Bishop-Goldsmith has been involved in the community include being a member of Community Board 13 and as a past PTA president. She has been a mother for 37 years and a grandparent for 16.
Bishop-Goldsmith said that she decided to run because she is unhappy with current leadership and thinks that they are not doing enough to improve the community.
“I’ve seen absolutely nothing that’s been done to improve our quality of life or anything else for that matter, other than constant negativity and embarrassment,” Bishop-Goldsmith said.
Bishop-Goldsmith said that some of the issues that currently need to be addressed are the size of classrooms, Medicare, overdevelopment and crime.
“It’s time to bring the issues into the open and address them,” Bishop-Goldsmith continued. “I just feel that it’s really time for the community to stand up and unite and try to make a positive change for our young people and other residents in the community.”
So far, Bishop-Goldsmith said that things have been going well with her campaign, saying that she feels “blessed.”
“We’re going great,” she said. “We’re getting our message out there to the people and we’re looking forward to going to Albany.”
