With the end of the school year and start of summer vacation right around the corner, Senator Serphin Maltese acknowledged 40 Queens teachers as part of Teacher Appreciation Week for their service and commitment to their school and students.
“Our teachers deserve special recognition for the role they play in educating and preparing our children for the future,” said Senator Maltese. “This is my special way of saying thank you and honoring all of the teachers in our community.”
Principals from each of the schools in Maltese’s district including those in Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood, Woodside and Woodhaven were encouraged to nominate an outstanding teacher from their school and submit that name to his office to represent the school and be recognized at an awards ceremony in their honor during National Teacher Appreciation Week.
The ceremony honoring the teachers took place on Friday, May 12, at the Italian Charities of America. Maltese presented each teacher with a special Senate Certificate of Merit in recognition of their outstanding service as a teacher.
The New York State Senate also passed a resolution sponsored by Maltese, honoring all New York State teachers and designating Tuesday, May 9, as Teacher Day in the State of New York.
Teacher Appreciation Week was established in 1985 when the national Parent Teacher Association (PTA) agreed to observe the first full week in May in dedication to teachers around the country.
