Supporters of Nora Marino, a Democratic candidate for the 11th State Senate seat, gathered at Il Bacco Restaurante in Little Neck to talk about a person they feel can beat incumbent State Senator Frank Padavan.
Marino, a trial lawyer who has worked for the Judge Advocate General's office, received the Queens County Democratic Organization endorsement to run against Padavan.
“We're very excited about this candidacy because we believe that Nora brings to this Senate race all the components that are necessary to take out a long overdue incumbent,” said Michael Reich, the organization's Executive Secretary. “Nora is going to be a breath of fresh air. When we were looking at this race, we kind of saw something special in her.”
State Senators Diane Savino and Toby Ann Stavisky and Assemblymembers Mark Weprin, Nettie Mayersohn and Ann Margaret Carrozza were among those in attendance on Monday, July 10, and all spoke in support of Marino.
“She is exactly what the New York Senate needs,” said Savino, who represents Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn. “We need to shake things up. Nora Marino represents the future of the New York State Senate.”
While addressing her supporters, Marino said that she wanted to run for Senate in order to help fix the problems that she sees in Albany, which she said can be done by creating a Democratic majority. She also said that some of the issues that need to be addressed are education funding, women's reproductive health rights and health insurance.
“I think what makes a good elected official is someone who cares in their heart for the people around them in their community and their state and their environment and their country,” Marino said. “It's your spirit and your heart and your mind that make someone a good leader and a good elected official.”
