Tom Suozzi, a Democratic candidate for New York State Governor, isn't the least bit deterred by polls which place fellow Democrat and current Attorney General Eliot Spitzer in the lead.
“Politics change when people start to pay attention,” Suozzi said during a town hall meeting in Maspeth. “More people are starting to pay attention to this race. It's definitely winnable and I'm going to work as hard as I can to win it.”
Suozzi, a CPA and lawyer, served as the mayor of Glen Cove, Long Island for eight years, beginning in 1993.
Since 2001, Suozzi, a father of three, has been the Nassau County Executive and boasts about turning around a county that was one of the worst run in the nation. Through his reform efforts, Nassau County was later called “one of the top three turn-around stories in the nation” by Smith's Ratings and Research Review.
“Everything I have done in my professional life has prepared me for this particular job at this particular time,” Suozzi said of his decision to run for Governor. He also said, “I can do it because I've done it. I had to fight some tough fights.”
Suozzi feels that his prior experience can much better serve New York than that of Spitzer.
“I'm a chief executive, and he's a prosecutor,” Suozzi said. “You can't solve the issues in New York State by issuing subpoenas and filing lawsuits.”
Among Suozzi's top priorities are addressing affordable housing and improving schools while not forgetting tax issues and the need for jobs. He said that to accomplish his goals, he'll need money and reform, adding that there is too much dysfunction in government.
“If New York State was a Wall Street company, Eliot Spitzer would have indicted it already,” Suozzi said.
Suozzi said that he is willing to battle for the residents of New York State and is willing to go up against anyone, even if it means fighting members of his own party.
“I'll fight the fights if necessary,” he said. “I'll fight anybody to try and solve problems.”
As Suozzi continues with his campaign, he said he is ignoring the polls and asks voters to do the same, saying that with the people on his side he can win the Primary on Tuesday, September 12.
“I'm running a real people's campaign and it's working,” Suozzi said. “People are into it.”
