Don't panic, relief is just a phone call away

Seventeen years ago, Judy Schiffman developed a panic disorder that greatly affected her way of life. After winning the ongoing battle with her panic attacks through counseling, she established Panic Relief Inc., a non-profit educational organization guaranteed to help others who suffer from the disease.
Although the organization's headquarters is located in New Jersey, Panic Relief Inc. offers its services to people in Queens and other areas nationwide. According to Schiffman, programs and workshops will be held in Bayside on Mondays and Wednesdays through teleconferencing or internet conferencing. Once more people enroll in the program, new locations will be set up throughout Queens. After attending a weekly teleconference or internet conference, in-person meetings will then be designed.
&#8220Our main goal is for people to learn how to manage panic disorder and control panic attacks,” Schiffman stated. &#8220We also teach them how to turn from a negative self image to positive self image.”
According to the organization, an estimated 19 million Americans suffer from panic and anxiety disorders, however only one in three receive proper treatment.
Many sufferers may face unpleasant symptoms such as heart palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, chest pains, nausea, dizziness, chills or hot flashes, tingling sensations, or a feeling of choking. Extreme cases of panic attacks can even lead a person to become housebound.
The program consists of workshops, seminars, and individual consulting. Schiffman's latest program, &#8220Six Weeks to Panic Relief,” includes a workbook on how to manage panic attacks as well as a CD and DVD explaining how the workbook aids in the process of easing problems linked with panic and anxiety.
