As the winter season approaches, another more serious season comes too - the flu season. Flu is often mistakenly assumed by many to be just another form of a cold.
That is not the case because they are very different. A cold is caused by several viruses and its symptoms are not as bad as the flu. A cold usually lasts about a week and usually does not develop any serious, life-threatening complications. On the contrary, flu is caused by a strain of flu virus and its symptoms are much worse than that of a cold.
In order to help prevent a deadly flu season, the Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, Inc. (KCS) will be conducting a free flu vaccination program begining on October 13 and running through December 11, targeting 3,400 Korean residents citywide through a series of 14 workshops.
The first Queens flu vaccination workshop will be held on Friday, October 20 at 9:30 a.m., in the Korean Missionary Church at 45-65 162nd Street, Flushing. The church's phone number is 718-461-7835. A second flu vaccination workshop will be held on Friday, October 27 at 9:30 a.m. in the Bayside Presbyterian Church located on 45-62 211th Street in Bayside. The church's phone number is 718-229-0858.
These workshops are open to any resident of New York City. Health insurance and proper immigrant status are not needed. The flu vaccination is available for any New Yorker who is 50 years and over, has a weak immune system, is pregnant, has diabetes, suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, has asthma, has heart disease, is an HIV/AIDS patient, medical providers and families living with elderly and minors less than 18-years-old.
