There was a recent newspaper article about an 84-year-old woman who had a cancerous tumor the size of a cantaloupe growing on her left breast.
The woman refused the necessary surgery. She was dying and knew it. The doctor who came to see the lady knowing about her wishes spoke to her and asked, “How can I be of assistance?”
The decision to make her comfortable in the last stages of life is called Palliative Care. This along with the term Hospice Care are the subjects of Queens Public Television's program “Bernie's Place.”
Dr. Christopher M. Comfort, Medical Director of Calvary Hospital was invited to explain these two approaches to end-of-life care.
This program will air on Tuesday, October 24 at 4 p.m. on Time Warner cable channel 35. It will be repeated on Friday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m. on channel 34.

Wisdom From Past Presidents
Wisdom imparted by past presidents of our nation has never been more needed than today.
As the quagmire in Iraq deepens, and as cries are heard calling for United States involvement in the conflict between Israel and Lebanon, George Washington's advice should be heeded. He urged commercial relations with other nations “but to have with them as little political connection as possible.”
The sixth U.S. president, John Quincy Adams, concurred when he stated, “America goes not abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.” Calvin Coolidge, our nation's 30th chief executive, famously summarized: “Perhaps one of the most important accomplishments of my administration has been minding my own business.”
These past presidents knew that the U.S. is not the police officer of the world. We do not have the right to send our troops to other nations under the pretext of helping them. Our armed forces' duty is to protect the U.S.

Help The 4th Grade Class
Our 4th grade class is currently studying the regions of the United States. We are learning about each state and their environment, landforms, and special places of interest. We are asking for your help.
We would like people to send us postcards that show us what your state is like. This would give us the opportunity to get a first hand look at your state and help us to become aware of the great country we live in.
If you would like to write a note on back, we would appreciate it. We want to take this opportunity in advance to thank you for helping us make learning a fun and rewarding experience. We appreciate your help.

Congratulations From A Reader
Congratulations on your 21st Anniversary Issue (October 5). Your issue reminded me of how fortunate we are living in one of the few remaining free societies with a wealth of information sources available for any citizen to access.
Today, in Queens we have ongoing circulation battles between a number of daily newspapers. Some, like the New York Daily News have launched special “Queens” sections to compete against locally based weekly newspapers like yourself.
In various Queens neighborhoods you have far better coverage of local community events than any daily newspaper can provide.
In the marketplace of ideas, let us hope there continues to be room for everyone. I am grateful that your paper has on many occasions over the years afforded me the opportunity to express my views along with many others who may have different opinions on the issues of the day.

Thank You Queens Courier
Thank you so much for participating in our Twelfth Annual Sports Festival.
We are happy to report that our event was a great success. The weather was beautiful and everyone enjoyed a fun-filled day. We could not have done this without your generosity.
I am happy to report that our twenty-four bedroom expansion is operational. The impact of the addition was immediately realized the first time we were able to save a pediatric oncology patient and his parents a grueling one hour trip home daily. It is a relief and a great comfort not to have to turn away families due to lack of space.
On behalf of the Outing Committee, Board of Directors and, most especially the families who benefit from your generosity, thank you for support.
