Less than one month after Congressmember Joseph Crowley and Senator Charles Schumer introduced legislation to rename the Woodside post office in honor of the late Chair of the Queens Democratic Organization, both the House and Senate approved the bills.
With the approval of both legislative bodies on Monday, October 2, the post office located at 39-25 61st Avenue will be known as “Thomas J. Manton Post Office Building.”
“The debt of gratitude owed to Thomas Manton for a lifetime of public service can never truly be repaid,” said Crowley, who replaced his mentor Manton as leader of the Queens Democratic Organization last month. “With this legislation to rename this post office in Tom Manton’s honor, we pay tribute to his remarkable career and enduring memory as a public servant who fought tirelessly for the people of Woodside and Queens to improve our quality of life.”
Manton spent more than 30 years representing Woodside as both a City Councilmember and Congressmember as well as serving 20 years the influential Chair of the Queens Democratic Organization.
“Thomas Manton dedicated his life to serving his community and constituents, many who had recently emigrated to Queens and needed a public servant like Manton to help them achieve the American dream,” Schumer said.
