World Premieres are Dazzling, Heartwarming at QTIP
Two successful world premieres impressed theatergoers at Queens Theatre in the Park (QTIP). A dazzling musical comedy, &#8220Shangri-La,” was held over for an additional week! It has been greeted by standing-room-only crowds in the studio theatre on the lower level. Meanwhile, a heartwarming musical sequel to Dickens' holiday classic entitled &#8220Tim and Scrooge” enjoyed a warm reception in the Claire Shulman Playhouse on the main floor.
Shangri-La
Three star-struck teenagers go from rags to riches in this nostalgic look at the girl groups of the 1960s. Popular writer/director Rob Urbinati has brought many shows to this venue and has really struck a chord with his original story.
The concept is not new but the trio's irrepressible energy, infectious smiles and unmistakable talent has sent this show to the top of the charts for Queens audiences. Director Michael Goldfried allows the threesome (Heather Lind, Jessica Scholl and Jennifer Weingarten) to deliver their words and music with sincerity. The teens go from innocence to bitter wisdom as they mirror the decade of the ‘60s itself.
Great songs from the era included &#8220Leader of the Pack,” &#8220Twist and Shout,” &#8220Chapel of Love” and &#8220Remember (Walking in the Sand)” among others. The audience was dancing in the aisles before the end of the evening.
A fourth performer, Andrew MacPhail, plays Cousin Brucie, Murray the K and Babalu as a voice offstage. But the girls are the undisputed stars. Heather Lind plays the street smart but emotionally wounded younger sister, Brenda. She goes from neighborhood pushover to social activist without missing a beat. Jessica Scholl (Actor's Equity) is also excellent as chatty, savvy Connie Greenwald. Shy, loyal older sister Diane, played by Jennifer Weingarten, blossoms onstage but remains a voice of reason.
Sets by Patrick K. Tennant, musical direction by Brandon Lowry, choreography by Gabrielle Lansner and costume design by Jacob A. Climer help assure that this feel-good musical is truly ready for an off Broadway run. Call 718-760-0064 for tix.
Tim and Scrooge
What if Tiny Tim Cratchit has grown up and Ebenezer Scrooge has bequeathed his fortune to the young idealist? Add music and you have Queens Theatre in the Park's world premiere presentation of &#8220Tim and Scrooge.”
The cast is filled with veteran Broadway, TV and Actor's Equity talents. The audience has been filled with wide-eyed children who may well be savoring their first taste of legitimate theatre.
Ebenezer Scrooge (William McCauley) is now a heavenly messenger who tries to prevent Tiny Tim (Bobby Steggert) from becoming a cold-hearted businessman. This heartwarming musical is directed by Nick Corley. Book and lyrics are by Nick Meglin with music by Neil Berg.
Truly a delightful holiday confection, it's a taste of Christmas past, present and future that should also head for an off Broadway run. Check QTIP's website at www.queenstheatre.org for information on upcoming events.
As always, save me a seat on the aisle.
