Councilmember Leroy Comrie hosted his fifth annual Tree Lighting and Youth Holiday Party at Liberty Park, where over 200 girls and boys received a gift. This year’s celebration was the culmination of Comrie’s annual Toy Drive to benefit underprivileged children in his district. During the last few weeks, numerous community residents dropped off toys and volunteered to wrap presents. “I want to thank all the businesses, community organizations and constituents who were helpful in making this event a success,” stated Comrie. “Because of their generous donations, many children in our community were able to have a fun-filled evening and enjoy the holiday season this year. While many in our city and nation are enjoying a season of prosperity, there are countless others who are not. There are many families in southeast Queens who have to choose between buying food and paying the heat bill or buying their child a gift. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to use my office as a conduit to assist these families today and will continue to do so in the future.” In addition to the tree lighting and gifts, children in attendance received hot chocolate, snacks and were treated to entertainment by the St. Stephens Dance Theater; Ja Rule L.I.F.E. Camp; and the BKW Steppers. Special appearances were made by Mr. Met and Santa Claus.
