The competition dates will be May 5 and 6 and the recital will be held on May 19. “The parents called and said they needed more time,” says Knight. The children needed more time to choose their works and practice, she says.”This is the first time we're doing this, so we don't know how many applicants we'll get,” says Knight. “We hope it's a lot of people.”The idea for the competition came from Flushing Town Hall's Deputy Director Cathy Hung. “It was one of her brainstorms for 2007,” says Knight. “It's her baby.” Hung decided to channel her passion for classical music into a young artists' competition. The musicians will be divided into three categories and performers range in age from 5 to 18.”It's open to the public and the kids can see what it's like to compete in a positive environment,” says Knight. “They'll have feedback that will help them in their learning process and the three winners will be able to play on stage.” They'll also receive new violins from a Flushing violin shop.Violinist Cha-Liang is the competition's artistic director and will be putting together a panel of judges.Applications can be downloaded from Flushing Town Hall's Web site, www.flushingtownhall.org, or applicants can call 718-463-7700 to have it mailed to them. Questions can also be directed to Hung at extension 235.
