In order to combat beach erosion, Councilmember Joseph Addabbo is calling on the Bush Administration to keep up with funding that is benefiting beaches in Rockaway.
Such funding aids in stopping erosion by providing sand replacement to reinforce beach walls. Beaches have continued to erode, and it is estimated that the erosion will double during the next two decades.
“If this situation is not addressed soon, the serious beach erosion will make beach use by Rockaway residents and its visitors more difficult,” said Addabbo, who is a member of the City Council Parks and Recreation Committee.
Addabbo said that the Army Corps of Engineers needs to also provide support, which will help the Park’s Department’s efforts. Although in the past the federal government has earmarked $10 million to assist Rockaway beaches, the Bush Administration has cut that figure.
“I am calling for further federal efforts to protect our coastline and add to our beaches,” Addabbo said.
A capital project that will improve various parts of the beaches is scheduled to begin this year.
“I have allocated $550,000 for the replacement and repair of facia boards along Shore Front Parkway in an effort to enhance the look of the boardwalk and to assist in the efforts of battling beach erosion,” Addabbo said.
