Career In Caring

As a long-time member of the medical field, Dr. Jasmin Moshirpur, the Dean for Elmhurst and Queens Hospital Center Programs at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Regional Medical Director at the Queens Health Network, has been giving back to the community by ensuring that they remain healthy and well-cared for.
A native of Iran, Moshirpur came to the United States in 1962 to continue with her medical education after receiving her degree from the Shiraz School of Medicine, saying that there were more learning opportunities and hospitals to train at in the U.S. She did her residency and fellowship at Mt. Sinai, while also rotating part of it at Elmhurst Hospital.
Originally, Moshirpur wanted to go to law school. However, her mother always said that she was “too soft” for that profession. Moshirpur’s mother then suggested that, if she wanted to help others, working in the medical field was the best way to do that.
“I find it very interesting to work here,” Moshirpur said, adding that the population she serves at Elmhurst is similar to the people she would have been helping had she gone back to Iran.
In the past, Moshirpur has served as the Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Out-Patient Department at Elmhurst Hospital and Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Elmhurst.
In her current role with Mt. Sinai, Moshirpur is responsible for overseeing the training program of the residents and fellows and ensuring that their education is at the same level, or even better, than Mt. Sinai.
Moshirpur said that, with the Queens Health Network, she is “responsible and accountable for the quality of the patient care.”
“I always believed that we are here to provide, to our best ability, first-rate quality care to our patients,” she said.
Throughout her career, Moshirpur has seen many positive achievements. She has promoted preventative medicine and is also proud of the fact that the Elmhurst Hospital has kept up on state-of-the-art technology, including having a DaVinci robot for an operating room.
“We can use it (state-of-the-art technology) to really provide the best care to our patients,” she said.
Moshirpur said that one of the hospital’s major strengths is its staff, many of whom have been there for more than 15 years. She said that they are satisfied with their work but are also constantly working to make things better every day.
“They are not only well-qualified for what they do, but the longevity of our staff is very unique,” Moshirpur said. “I think that is, to me, the best accomplishment a hospital can have - to have a devoted group of qualified physicians.”
Along with working with the community and local community board on a regular basis through the hospital, Moshirpur is the president of the Shiraz University School of Medical Sciences Alumni Association and president of the New York chapter of the Iranian American Medical Association.
For the last 35 years, Moshirpur has lived in Douglaston. She is the mother of three children, two of which work in the medical field and one who works in law.
“My major achievement in my life is my children,” Moshirpur said. “I take a real pride of having them and I’m so grateful that I could accomplish my job in raising them in a right way that they can also be a big help to society.”
Moshirpur also has 10 grandchildren who range in age from three to 10 years old.
“That’s another bright side of my life,” she said.
Moshirpur said that she is always looking to continue making improvements and advancements at the hospital. Among her future goals are improving patient safety, improving patient satisfaction, creating an atmosphere where everyone can learn, continuing to keep up on new technology and expansion of services.
