Enter N-Word essay contest

City Councilmember Leroy Comrie announced the first annual Black History Month Essay Contest for middle school students.
Open to New York City residents in the sixth to ninth grades or between the ages of 10 to 13, the theme of this year’s essay contest, which is co-sponsored by the Brooklyn-based Abolish The N-Word Project, Inc., is “Why the N-Word Should Never Be Used.”
Mail double-spaced, typed essays of 250 words or less to the Office of New York City Councilmember Leroy Comrie, Attention: Essay Contest, 250 Broadway, Room 1865, New York, NY 10007.
Announced on Friday, February 9, entries must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21 and should contain the student’s full name, age, home address and telephone number, parents’ name, school name and grade, principal’s name, school address and telephone number.
Winners will receive gift bags and be honored with City Council citations at City Hall on Wednesday, February 28. For more information, call Comrie’s office at 212-788-7084 or 718-776-3700.
