Former Assemblymember Jimmy Meng and Flushing businessperson and philanthropist Peter Koo were honored by the Organization of Chinese Americans-Long Island (OCA-LI) at the Flushing Chinese Business Association (FCBA) on Thursday, February 1st. The awards were presented to Meng and Koo by Gladys Yan, president of the OCA-LI and John Tandana, executive vice president.
Both men have had distinguished business careers and a long history of public service.
Meng, the first Asian-American elected to New York’s State Assembly was born in China and has lived with his wife and three children in Flushing for 25 years. He served as a member of former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s Small Business Advisory Council, and as president of the Flushing Business Association. His many projects include creating the Flushing Business Improvement District and has worked towards cleaner, safer streets, in Flushing.
Peter Koo is currently the president of the FCBA, chairperson of the Asian Job Service Employer Committee, commissioner of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission, a member of Community Board 7 as well as being president of Starside Drug Stores of New York.
“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to serve the community,” Meng said after receiving his award.
Peter Koo took the gathering by surprise and lived up to his reputation as a generous patron of the Asian community when he handed over a check for $1,000 for the Organization of Chinese American’s new national building in Washington. “I think we should all give to this worthy cause,” he said.
