QCA holds awards ceremony

The Queens Council on the Arts celebrated its work this past year and the artists and organizations that benefited from it during its 2007 Queens Community Arts Fund Award Ceremony on Thursday, January 25.
“The mission of the Queens Council on the Arts is to foster, and develop the arts in Queens County and to support arts organizations and individual artists in presenting their cultural diversity for the benefit of the community,” the organization’s website states.
One way in which Queens Council on the Arts, which was founded in 1966 by Jeanine Dale Katz, accomplishes this mission is through a regranting program. The recent group of awardees included 46 organizations, 10 individual artists and seven schools.
“We love what you do to make the arts happen in Queens so people want to come here instead of going across a bridge or going in a tunnel,” Teresa Osborne, the Director of Cultural Affairs and Tourism for the Queens Borough President’s Office, said during the ceremony, which was held at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel.
Assemblymember Ellen Young said, “It is my honor to be here to say congratulations and keep up the good work.”
Jennifer Callahan, who applied through the Rockaway Music & Art Council, was one award recipient. She and Elizabeth Harris are working on the documentary “The Bungalows of Rockaway.” She said that the grant from Queens Council on the Arts is very meaningful for her project, and that it will enable them to spend more time on the editing process.
“They’re very important and wonderful,” Callahan said of Queens Council on the Arts’ work, adding that she wants to attend more of the events held by her fellow recipients.
