Time out for women’s good health

By Lesley Grimm

This may be just what the doctor ordered — All Brooklyn women are invited to an upcoming health forum. “Bringing a Voice to Women of the Diaspora” on March 15 will address the unique concerns of women from Brooklyn’s melting pot of cultural ethnic and religious backgrounds. “The 18th Senate District is probably one of the most diverse districts in the city, if not the State,” said State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, who represents several neighborhoods including Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant. Montgomery announced the summit while speaking at the February 20 meeting of the 88th Precinct Community Council at 170 Adelphi Street. Montgomery is co-sponsoring the women’s health forum along with other state and local elected representatives, health organizations and community groups. “Diaspora” will bring together experts in the fields of health and global studies to share their knowledge of traditions and practices from around the world. Topics will include primary and specialized health care, mental health, reproductive health and HIV prevention. “We’ll also be talking about domestic violence,” Montgomery said, stating this was a particular concern for minority and immigrant women. “Because they’re isolated, they don’t know where to turn.” The forum is scheduled for March 15, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Dibner Auditorium at Polytechnic University, located at Six MetroTech Center.
