This past month a group of 12 women from the Federation Employment and Guidance Service (FEGS), an organization in Little Neck that helps mentally disabled females held a bake sale and put the money they earned towards some great community service.
By selling cupcakes, cakes, and other goodies, the group was able to raise about $80. They then purchased household cleaning items such as paper towels, dishwashing detergent, bathroom cleaner and toilet paper and donated these to the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.
FEGS is a habilitation service program. The women meet once a week to learn basic life skills, which include personal hygiene, building self-esteem, and how to make good decisions about diet and nutrition. A big part of the program is meeting and becoming good friends with everyone.
“I try to make sure they utilize the skills they are learning so that they learn self-confidence and develop a sense of independence,” said Michelle Hodges, the program’s director. “A big part of the program is community inclusion and getting involved in activities. They go out and volunteer at various work sites everyday. These women are wonderful - they all know each other very well and have become friends. It’s like a sisterhood.”
