About two dozen neighbors and community activists gathered in Flushing recently to express support for the family and dedicate a tree to the memory of Julian Ramon, the 22 year-old Marine corporal killed in Iraq.
Ramon, a graduate of John Bowne High School in Flushing, died last year in an explosion on July 20 last year, in Al Anbar province. It was his second combat tour.
City Councilmember John Liu stood with Ramon’s parents Julio and Yolanda Ramon and younger brothers Sebastian, 19, and Juan, 16, at the dedication on Saturday, May 20, in the courtyard of the building where the family lives at 137-60 45th Avenue.
During his remarks Liu reminded the crowd, “Julian was a kid from Flushing, who grew up right here in this building. He paid the ultimate price defending our freedom and democracy.” He announced his support in conjunction with Community Board 7 to rename the street in front of the building after Corporal Ramon.
Both brothers spoke of their fallen sibling, nicknamed “Razor,” calling him a friend and hero - the “best of the best.”
Ramon’s father declined to speak but his tearful mother spoke in Spanish, of her oldest son - of love joy and sadness.
