A dead thresher shark (five feet in length) washed ashore at Beach 113th Street in Rockaway on Sunday, September 2, and Parks Department officials believe it is the same creature seen swimming the day before, prompting the closing of Rockaway Beach and the surrounding bay.
On Saturday, September 1, a shark washed up near Beach 109th Street.
“The Parks Department lifeguards appropriately closed that section of the beach for most of the day, as the shark could be seen swimming just off shore for several hours,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.
Beaches were open for the Labor Day weekend as usual.
