Eighteen-month-old Max Kornberg offers hands full of leaves to his dad as he romps in a sea of leaves recently. Max, and kids throughout Queens have just a few more days to enjoy this rite of autumn - the Department of Sanitation’s scheduled pickup day for leaves is Saturday, December 1.
The composting of leaves is one of the major features in reducing the amount of solid waste in the city and a key element in the “greening of New York.” The old-style plastic bags clogged up the composting system - if your leaves are in them, the city’s strongest won’t pick them up - according to officials.
Therefore, unless you want your leaves left in front of your home put them in large paper bags being sold for this purpose, or in unlined containers for pickup. For information on the composting program and where to get the right bags, visit www.nyc.gov./wasteless.
