The Lutheran School of Flushing and Bayside will receive nine refurbished computers to support the school’s educational programs. The computers were made available through a state program administered by the New York Power Authority (NYPA).
The computers were supplied under a state law that created the program authorizing NYPA to provide refurbished computers to educational institutions across New York State.
“We are always pleased to help schools around the state in any way we can,” said Roger B. Kelley, NYPA president and chief executive officer. “The computer program is in line with this objective and complements efforts such as our ‘Power to Schools’ energy efficiency program, which helps schools cut energy costs and improve air quality.”
The largest state-owned electric utility in the U.S., it finances its operations through revenue from electricity sales and the sale of bonds.
NYPA utilizes about 1,700 computers in its normal operation and replaces about 400 to 500 computers each year. Since 2002, they have reconditioned and distributed more than 500 computers to educational facilities throughout New York State.
This is the first donation by NYPA to a Queens school since 2003, when they delivered 10 computers to P.S. 84 in Long Island City and 10 computers to Our World Neighborhood Charter School located in Astoria.
The Thursday, November 1 announcement was issued by NYPA, and was made by City Councilmember Tony Avella, who represents the district in which the school is located.
“Computers are such an important resource in today’s technology-driven learning environment,” Avella said. “The donation of these computers will help young students prepare for tomorrow’s educational challenges today.”
The reconditioning of surplus computers includes thorough cleaning of the equipment and replacement of broken or missing parts, as well as installation of a new operating system and at least 128 megabytes of memory.
