Community leaders and elected officials gathered at Young Israel of Hillcrest recently at the invitation of Assemblymember Rory Lancman, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the U.N. vote to create the State of Israel.
The event, organized by several cultural and civic groups, was dubbed “A Decision at Flushing Meadows” and featured actual footage of the General Assembly vote, taken on November 29, 1947.
Before construction of the Manhattan U.N. complex, they met in the building in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park which now houses the Queens Museum and the Panorama of New York.
“It is such an honor and a delight that this great event which changed the face of the world happened right here in Queens. It is something that every Queens resident should be aware of and proud of,” Lancman said.
