An organization backing the Khalil Gibran International Academy’s founding principal is hosting a “celebration” for the school. Communities in Support of Khalil Gibran International Academy will hold a festive gathering on January 29 to celebrate the school’s message of diversity and multiculturalism. “We’re going to have a multicultural evening in support of the school and in support of Debbie [Almontaser] as the founding principal,” explained Adem Carroll, a member of Communities in Support of Khalil Gibran International Academy, which is pushing for Almontaser’s reinstatement. As it is the theme of the Khalil Gibran Academy, Arabic culture will be front and center during the evening. Attendees at the free event will be treated to Arabic food, music and poems, including those written by Khalil Gibran, a Lebanese-American poet, writer, and artist. Carroll said the organization hopes attendees will see the positive side of Arabic culture and not associate it with fears of terrorism. “We’re trying to promote multicultural culture but want to make sure Arabic culture is in that mix,” he said. The celebration will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Park Slope United Methodist Church, located at 410 6th Avenue. For more information, log onto www.kgia.wordpress.com.
