John McGlynn, the second-year head coach of the Archbishop Molloy girls' basketball team, resigned Wednesday, the TimesLedger has learned. The players were informed yesterday and former head JV coach Dom Cecala will replace McGlynn starting at practice today, according to athletic director Mike McCleary.
Varsity assistant coach Kevin McBride will also depart from the Briarwood school.
“It didn't work out,” said McGlynn, who was head JV coach at Molloy for four years before taking over the varsity. “I hope they go forward from here.”
It's the second Stanners coaching change in 2 ½ years. Varsity coach Marty Towey left after the 2005-06 season.
McGlynn cited a “conflict between what we wanted and what the players wanted” as the reason for his resignation, but stressed that it was fully his decision.
“More than five people couldn't be on the floor at one time,” said McGlynn, who is a former coach of the AAU Liberty Belles. “[The players] didn't buy into what we wanted to do.”
Sources told the TimesLedger that parents of players on the team met with McCleary at the school Monday afternoon to air grievances about McGlynn. Molloy (2-2 CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division I) started the league season with a win against St. Francis Prep before losing to Mary Louis and Christ the King. McGlynn resigned after his team beat Bishop Kearney on Wednesday.
The Stanners host St. Joseph Hill (Staten Island) tomorrow at 2 p.m.
“It's a great school,” McGlynn said. “It just didn't work out.”
