Queens has won the BE COOL Challenge, crowning it as the coolest borough in New York.
This past summer, the New York Power Authority, Con Edison and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) challenged residents of New York’s five boroughs and Westchester County to save energy by switching to power-efficient air conditioners.
Responding to the challenge, Queens replaced over 3,000 old window and through-the-wall inefficient units with Energy Star qualified models, preventing over 400,000 pounds of harmful carbon dioxide emissions and saving over 370,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
“Queens residents should be proud to have made this significant impact on the environment and of their effort to conserve energy,” Helen Marshall, Queens Borough President, said. “We won the BE COOL Challenge because it’s our people that truly make Queens the coolest.”
According to GetEnergySmart.org, the official webpage of the program, New Yorkers can save over $50 a year on their energy bill by making the switch and at the same time contribute to reducing greenhouse gases.
