Harold Marks, 77, former DePhillips Athletic Club (DAC) director, died January 30 from breast cancer. Marks spent 33 years with the DAC.
Serving as the athletic director for 22 years before retiring to Florida, Marks did everything from ordering uniforms to applying for permits, making schedules for umpires, ordering trophies and securing gym usage from schools.
“You don’t replace someone like him. You just try to make do,” said DAC president Tom Hubany.
A retired print manufacturer, Marks became involved in the DAC in 1972 when his son Michael was enrolled in the league.
By the late 70’s, he had become its first vice president. Marks moved up to athletic director in 1982 when the position was vacated.
“The children of our community have lost a great champion of youth sports,” said Hubany. He plans to write the Parks Department and request that Field Number 5 at Crocheron Park be named in memory of Marks, who is survived by a wife, Rochelle, and two children, Ann and Michael.
