Although little snow has been spotted in the borough this winter, cold temperatures are expected to continue for the next few months.
City Councilmember Hiram Monserrate and Assemblymember Jose Peralta are trying to help keep some of their constituents warm by distributing free winter coats to people who may not be able to afford them.
“New York is very cold and in today’s economy, heating homes and apartments is very expensive,” Peralta said. “I am trying to spread the word about initiatives to combat mortality and illnesses by giving free coats to families in need, and by providing information to the families under my care about heating grants and weatherization tips for their places of living.”
The two Queens legislators with the help of representatives from Health Plus, Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Local 338 and Home Energy Assistance Programs collected nearly 400 coats to give out to families.
“It is important for our community to be aware of the resources made available to them,” Monserrate said. “For people who do not have the resources to purchase their own coat, this can be a lifesaver.”
Coats can be picked up at the Corona-Elmhurst Center for Economic Development located at 39-13 104th Street between the hours of 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. until supplies last.
“The Economic Development Center is in a key location for members of our community to obtain a winter coat to keep warm for the remainder of the season,” Monserrate said.
