Sylven Landesberg can add yet another honor to his special senior year. The Virginia-bound guard on the Holy Cross basketball team was named Mr. New York Basketball, an award that will be presented to him at the state Federation tournament in Glens Falls.
Landesberg is the first Holy Cross player named Mr. New York Basketball since Willie Dersch in 1996.
Landesberg is the all-time leading scorer at Holy Cross, reaching the 2,000-point plateau this year. The 6-foot-7 guard, who averaged 29.4 points per game, helped lead Holy Cross to its first CHSAA Class AA intersectional title in 40 years.
On Monday he'll fly to Milwaukee, Wis., to compete in the McDonald's All-American Game, joining Rice's Kemba Walker as the lone New York players in the game. He is the school's third McDonald's All-American, following Derrick Chievous and Dersch.
