Two thousand students returned to their classrooms on Monday, March 10 after having been displaced because of an accidental mercury spill in their school.
The spill occurred on Wednesday. March 5 inside the Humanities and Arts Magnet High School in Cambria Heights when a custodian broke a barometer.
According to Margie Feinberg, spokesperson for the Department of Education (DOE), a staffer mat have been taken to the hospital following the incident “as a precaution;” and was treated and released.
Also as a precaution, the 2,000 students from the four school located inside the building at 207-01 116th Avenue were transported to other area schools by DOE buses.
The Department of Health conducted tests at the site following a clean up and gave the green light for students to return on Monday, March 5.
