Steve Augeri, the former lead singer of Journey, and long-time radio and TV host Joe Franklin, will be adding some celebrity sparkle to Bay Ridge’s upcoming Senior Idol competition. The competition will be held on April 12th at Xaverian High School, 7100 Shore Road, beginning at 8 p.m. Twelve Brooklyn seniors will be vying for the title of Senior Idol, in the kick-off competition dreamed up by the Ovington Chapter of the AARP (chapter 5055). There will also be a performance by the Xaverian Barbershop Quartet. Approximately 30 seniors competed in a preliminary round held last month at Xaverian. The winner on April 12th will walk off with a $250 grand prize, donated by Commerce Bank. Augeri — who was born in Brooklyn and who has also performed with Tyketto and Tall Stories — will be a judge. The other judges are State Senator Marty Golden, City Council-member Vincent Gentile and Xaverian’s musical director, Joe Loposky. Franklin – the “king of nostalgia” best known as the host of Memory Lane — will be the master of ceremonies. “I think it’s going to be a memorable night, really awesome,” remarked Gail Asfazadour, who has been publicizing the event for the AARP chapter. “All of the finalists have fabulous voices,” she enthused. Contestants range in age from 50 to 85, Asfazadour added. Admission to the event is $10 per person. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. For further information, call 917-476-8751.
