Not to be outdone by the big kids, the third and fourth graders at the Immaculate Conception School in Jamaica Estates have their own spelling bee every year. The winners get trophies and certificates.
This year’s first-place winner was Kenneth Escobar. The spelling sensation of the fourth grade class also won a year’s online subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Seen here are (from left) fourth grade teacher Mrs. Ritter; Escobar; principal Mrs. Breen; fellow fourth graders Sarah Rodriguez who finished third and Jexel-Jay Sabordo, who placed second, and teacher Mrs. Huza.
