Internationally renowned singer Maureen McGovern, star of Broadway’s “Little Women,” “Nine” and “Pirates of Penzance,” is bringing the “Great American Songbook” to Queensborough Community College.
She pays tribute to some of the many great composers who have influenced her life and career, from George Gershwin and Mel Torm/ to Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, at The Queensborough Performing Arts Center (QPAC) on Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m.
McGovern has been called “The Stradivarius Voice.” Her recording career began with her chart-topping, Oscar-winning, International Gold Record performance of “The Morning After” from the movie, “The Poseidon Adventure” in 1973.
The smash hit led to her Grammy nomination for “Best New Artist.”
Perhaps best known for movie soundtrack songs like “The Morning After,” and “Can You Read My Mind,” from “Superman,” McGovern has received wide acclaim for her more than 25 albums and CDs.
Her recordings span genres that include classic standards, jazz, folk and songs for children, and she just received the 2008 MAC Lifetime Achievement Award at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs.
The awards honor achievements in New York City cabaret, comedy and jazz and salute outstanding contributions to the field of live entertainment.
In a recent New York Times article, Stephen Holden recently wrote “Her vocal texture suggests a folk-jazz Barbra Streisand with an extra octave.”
