New State Regent is from Hollis Hills

Lester W. Young (left), of Hollis Hills, is the latest member of the New York State Board of Regents. The Jamaica High School graduate is currently an associate professor at Long Island University’s Graduate School of Education.
His nomination was seconded by Assemblymember Mark Weprin (right) who also lives in Hollis Hills, and is a fellow Jamaica High School alumnus. The Assembly voted unanimously to confirm Young.
Previously, he had been a teacher; guidance counselor; supervisor of special education services; a principal; community superintendent, and Senior Executive for Youth Development and School Community Services in the New York City school system.
Young also served as Associate Commissioner in the New York State Department of Education for five years.
Established by the New York State Legislature on May 1, 1784, the Regents of The University of the State of New York form the oldest, continuous state education entity in America. The Regents are responsible for the general supervision of all educational activities within the State.
