The city can take pride in the way it handled the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. The aging leader of the nation's 65 million Catholics was given a royal welcome. From his two speeches at the United Nations to his trip to Ground Zero to his mass before a packed Yankee Stadium, everything went off without a hitch.
That's no accident. The logistics of hosting such an event were enormous, especially at a time when the threat of terrorism is always present. For three days the eyes of the world were once again on New York City.
The Pope's visit was also a reminder of the important role Catholicism has played and continues to play in this city and borough, even when hard times have resulted in the closing of schools and churches. Congratulations to everyone involved including people of many faiths.
