College Round-Up

Left-handed pitcher Victor Gonzalez pitched a complete-game three-hitter with 14 strikeouts, while teammates Sean Smith and Joel Feliz notched three RBIs apiece Wednesday afternoon at KeySpan Park, as the second-seeded Queensborough Community College Tigers captured their record 12th City University of New York Athletic Conference Community College Baseball Championship with a 7-3 victory over top-seeded Bronx. Queensborough broke the game open for good with a four-run second inning, with Feliz (2-for-4; two-run triple to center field) and catcher Jonathan Valentin (solo home run off the left-field scoreboard) providing the loudest hits in the frame.

New Haven 12, Queens College 10. Mike Sporton led a 15 hit attack with three hits, including a home run, and three RBI's in the Queens College, 12-10 loss to New Haven on Sunday in Flushing. The loss brings an end to QC's 2008 season. UNH led most of the way, scoring six times in the first and four times in the fourth to open up a 10-4 lead. The Knights chipped away at that lead and eventaully knotted the game at 10 with three in the seventh. A bases loaded walk to Jason Espinal scored Justin McKay with the first run of the inning and Jamie Quinn followed with a two run single that plated Sean Sciretta and Luis Rojas to even the score. However, the deadlock was short lived as UNH scored twice in the top of the eighth to go up for good. Quinn finished the day with three hits while McKay had two hits and two RBI's in the loss for QC (11-25-1, 9-17-1 ECC).

New Haven 1, Queens College 0. Knights hurlers surrendered just three runs on the day but received no support from their offense in losing in Connecticut on Saturday. Dan Blake limited the Knights to one base runner – a Luis Rojas single – in a complete game win for UNH in the nightcap. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Nick Sperounis doubled and Nick Garrido singled him home with two outs for the game's only run. Brian Friedman pitched well for QC, going six and yielding seven hits, but was tagged with the loss.

New Haven 2, Queens College 0. The Knights could only muster three singles on the day. New Haven would score the only run they would need in the first inning of the opener when Mike Mores knocked in Jimmy Rivas with two outs. The home team added an insurance run in the seventh off of hard luck loser William Marte, who gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings of work. UNH's Matt Somo struck out 10 in seven innings while surrendering just two hits, singles to Sean Sciretta and Carlos Suarez, in picking up the victory.
