The St. John's baseball team dropped the last game of a three-game series to Notre Dame, 8-4, Sunday at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind. Red Storm first baseman Tim Morris was 2-for-2 in the game with an RBI, Michael Aicardi was 1-for-1 with a two-RBI double and Chris Anninos was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI and a run scored for the Red Storm (31-10, 13-5 Big East). Brett Lilley, who was 2-for-4, led the Fighting Irish to the win with three runs scored.
St. John's 6, Notre Dame 4. Jeff Grantham was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, one double and a stolen base in the second game of the series Saturday. Carlos Del Rosario was 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a double, and Gino Matias was 1-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Anninos was 2-for-4, scoring a run and hitting a double. Gil Zayas walked twice and drove in one run. Starting pitcher George Brown, allowed three runs on eight hits, one of them a home run, while striking out two.
St. John's 10, Notre Dame 3. Anninos had a stupendous opener of the series Friday, when he was 3-for-5 with two home runs, two RBIs, two scored runs and a stolen base. Three more home runs were hit by Red Storm batters Matias, Paul Karmas and Greg Hopkins. Matias was 1-for-5, with one RBI and a run scored, Karmas was 1-for-5, with three RBIs and a run, and Hopkins was 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Del Rosario was 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and one stolen base, and Daniel Benedetti was 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Adelphi 6, Queens College 5. The Knights dropped a heartbreaker to Adelphi University, in 13 innings Sunday in Garden City, L.I. Justin McKay and Luis Rojas each had three hits, including dramatic solo home runs in the ninth inning, for Queens College (11-22, 9-14 ECC) in this East Coast Conference match-up.
Queens College 1, Adelphi 0. Brian Honeyman pitched the Knights to a nightcap win over Adelphi University Saturday afternoon in Flushing. QC rode the arm of their ace to take the nightcap and salvaged a split. Honeyman pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out seven in recording the win for Queens College. Ed Hackimer walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to push across the winning run for the Knights. With the win, Honeyman improved to 6-0.
Adelphi 8, Queens College 4. Adelphi spoiled a Queens College rally by taking the opener. The Knights scored twice in the seventh inning off AU ace Bobby Lanigan to tie up game one, 4-4. After wasting a chance to go ahead in the eight, QC surrendered four runs to Adelphi in the ninth and lost the game. Justin McKay had two singles and a double and Mike Sporton went two for four for the home team in the loss.
Softball
Villanova 3, St. John's 1. Roxy Struble was the only one to put a point on the board for St. John's on the Red Storm's home field Sunday, after scoring a run off a walk. Chelsea Durning was 1-for-4, Alyson Funn, Kacee Cox, Brandy Reyes, and Lisa Geer all went 1-for-3, Geer with an RBI for St. John's (20-34, 5-17 Big East). Villanova's Kristen Jelinski was 2-for03 with a home run, and RBI and a run scored to lead her team to victory
St. John's 2, Villanova 1. Freshman pitcher Kat Lawrence allowed only one run on two hits and struck out eight in the first game of the double header. Funn was 1-for-3 with a home run. Durning was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Cox was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Rutgers 6, St. John's 4. Cox went 1-for-1 with a home run in the game against Rutgers at Red Storm Field on Saturday. Durning was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Reyes was 1-for-4 with an RBI, Struble was 3-for 4 with a run scored and Melissa Pilley went 1-for-3, scoring a run.
St. John's 5, Rutgers 0. Cox went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. Funn was 1-for-4 with a run scored, Geer was 2-for-3, Shauntaine Harris finished 1-for-2 with a run and Bionka King was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run driven in.
St. Thomas Aquinas 11, Queens College 5. St. Thomas Aquinas College took a pair from Queens College, in Sparkill, N.Y., Saturday afternoon. The doubleheader loss wraps up the Lady Knights' 2008 East Coast Conference schedule. QC used a three run second inning in the nightcap to jump out to an early advantage. Jill Rini singled and later scored on an error, Christina Colon drove in a run with a double and Katie Karpinski added an RBI single to account for the three runs. St. Thomas Aquinas answered right back in the top of the third with three runs to knot the game and added two in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Karpinski went 3-for-4 while Katie Miracco and Rini each had two hits in four at bats for QC (16-30, 8-12 ECC) in a losing effort.
St. Thomas Aquinas 4, Queens College 3. A two run home run by Miracco put QC ahead 2-1 after two innings in the day's first game. Nicole Mancusi added a solo shot in the fourth to extend the Lady Knights lead to 3-1, but STAC scored two in the fifth to tie and another in the sixth to go ahead for good and record the victory.
