Accident on LIE spills gravel onto highway

FRESH MEADOWS — A major accident on the Long Island Expressway created a nightmare for motorists Saturday.

A trunk carrying gravel crashed into a divider and overturned as it was traveling eastbound on the highway near Peck Avenue, police said. Although authorities said no one was seriously hurt in the accident, the vehicle's cargo spread all over both sides of the highway.

Cars were at a standstill in both directions as crews worked round the clock for hours to remove the debris.
