College Round-Up: Red Storm’s rally falls short, season ends against Texas

The St. John’s baseball team rallied to score two runs in the ninth, but was defeated by No. 19 Texas, in a Houston Regional elimination game of the NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon. Chris Anninos was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Carlos Del Rosario was 1-for-4 and had two RBIs to lead St. John’s (42-16). Jeff Grantham was 1-for-4 with an RBI, Tom La Stella was 1-for-1 with a run scored, and Greg Hopkins was also 1-for-4 with a run scored. Red Storm started Matt Tosoni (6-2), who allowed just two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Austin Wood (7-3) allowed three runs in 8 2.3 innings to lead Texas (39-21). St. John’s set a new school record with 42 wins and compiled the program’s best winning percentage (.724) since 1984. The Red Storm won its second straight Big East regular-season title and earned its second straight NCAA tournament appearance.

Rice 11, St. John’s 2. Brian Kemp was 2-for-4, leading St. John’s in hits in the Red Storm’s first loss in the NCAA Houston Regional to Rice Saturday night. Grantham was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Gino Matias was 1-for-4 with a run scored and Hopkins was 1-for-4. Tim Morris was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Cole St. Clair was the winning pitcher for Rice, not allowing any runs and striking out four in 4.1 innings.

St. John’s 2, Texas 1. Anninos led St. John’s to a win against Texas Saturday night. He was 2-for-3 with a double, one stolen base and a walk. Starter Scott Barnes gave up only one run over 7 2/3 innings. Kemp was 1-for-3 with a walk, Grantham was walked to drive in a run, and Del Rosario was 1-for-5 with an RBI. Paul Karmas was 1-for-4, and Hopkins finished 1-for-3 with one walk. The two runs were scored by Matias and Morris.

Michaelsen picked in Major League Lacrosse draft. Senior Tom Michaelsen continues to make history for the St. John’s lacrosse program as he was selected by the San Francisco Dragons in the fifth round of the Major League Lacrosse Draft Wednesday night in Hoboken, N.J. Michaelsen is the first-ever Red Storm player to compete in one of the two professional lacrosse leagues.

“To be the first St. John’s lacrosse player to play professional lacrosse is very exciting,” Michaelsen said. “I am really honored to represent my school at such a high level.”

Michaelsen was the seventh pick for the Dragons, a member of the MLL’s Western Conference, and the 42nd pick in the overall draft, which included eight players from St. John’s conference, the ECAC.

Barnes Arico announces addition to staff and promotion of Tartamella. St. John’s head women’s basketball coach Kim Barnes Arico announced today that Joe Tartamella has been elevated to associate head coach of the Red Storm, and Danny Hughes will join the staff as an assistant coach.

“I am really excited to name Joe my associate head coach and Danny an assistant,” said Barnes Arico. “I think they are two phenomenal people and outstanding basketball coaches that will help continue to take our program forward. I think our program is going in the right direction and Joe and Danny will take it even further along.”

Tartamella was elevated to his new position after serving as an assistant coach for the past three seasons. Hughes comes to St. John’s from the University of Houston, where he spent the past season as the interim head coach of the Cougars and the prior two seasons as an assistant coach.

Queens College wins NCAA Diversity Award. Queens College’s Athletics Department has been selected to receive a 2008 Diversity in Athletics Award for Overall Excellence in Diversity from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

“Diversity has always played a major role in the cultural environment of our department and of Queens College in general,” says Richard (Doc) Wettan, director of athletics. “Our students come from over 100 nations and speak scored of languages. The contributions they have made through their varied backgrounds and diverse perspectives have proven invaluable to our growth and success.”

Queens College is the only City University of New York (CUNY) college that participates in Division II sports. QC’s Athletics Department is a member of NCAA and a founding member of the East Coast Conference (ECC), on of the strongest conferences in the nation, with teams competing in a dozen sports.
