The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded nearly $10 million in new Federal Aviation Administration funds for improvements at Queens airports.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Wednesday the federal money would be used for vital improvements and renovations at John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports with $6,227,290 to go to rehabilitating Taxiway E and $1,477,845 to pay for improvement of runway 4L/22R, both at JFK. Schumer said $2,800,000 has been allocated to complete Phase II of the rehabilitation of the Grand Central Parkway Flyover Bridge at LaGuardia Airport.
“The runway and taxiway rehabilitation at JFK and the access road improvements at LaGuardia will come as great news to New York residents and travelers,” Schumer said. “Each year these airports welcome millions of tourists and business travelers and these renovations will help make each and every traveler's experience both easier and safer.”
“I will continue to fight for federal funds to help these airports remain pre-eminent centers of activity and international hubs for air travel.”
Schumer has long been heavily involved in efforts to relieve flight delays at New York City's three major airports.
The senator has called for new technology to replace an outdated flight control system, adequately staffed control towers and “better management of our airports and skies.”
Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International airport have been designated the worst on a list of the nation's 35 busiest airports when it comes to on-time flights.
