The Rand Corporation has recommended that the NYPD increase the use of Tasers, hoping they will become an alternative to lethal force. While the jury is still out, the expanded use of Tasers is worth a try.
The gun-shaped device incapacitates victims with a pulsating electrical shot from a device that looks like a handgun. Unlike old models that require close contact, new Tasers fire an electronic dart from a distance. They give officers an alternative to firing guns in situations such as domestic violence incidents.
The NYCLU and others have concerns. Tasers represent a violent use of force and may cause death or serious injury. Taser use will need close regulation.
Nevertheless, Tasers appear to be an effective alternative to firing a weapon.
