Towers Group Dedicated To Albert Einstein Cancer Research

The Towers League for Albert Einstein Cancer Research is going strong as members continue to make a difference by raising funds to go towards cancer research.
There are about 400 residents of North Shore Towers who are members of their organization. In addition, there are about 50 non-residents who are also involved with it.
The Towers League supports the research being done by the Albert Einstein Cancer Center, which is located in the Bronx. In order to raise funds, they hold various events, such as sponsoring a cruise or trips to Atlantic City or having a luncheon and card party. They also do “shop for a cure” and send out tribute cards that people can use to many a donation in honor or memory of someone.
The long-time president of the organization is Rhoda Sobelman.
“I lost my father to cancer and I felt that as a group of women and men living in North Shore Towers we could possibly afford to support a research center and help find a cure for cancer,” Sobelman said.
Executive board member Rhoda Sklar joined the Towers League when she first moved to the Towers.
“I’m a retired school teacher. I play golf and tennis but I was looking to do something to give back to the world for the wonderful life I’ve had,” Sklar said. “I went to a meeting and saw the wonderful work that the organization does and what Einstein does.”
There are about 15 residents who make up the executive board. Sklar described them as “a little nucleus that does a lot of work.”
“We have a very active Board of Directors and we just try our best,” Sklar said.
During the winter months, the Towers League continues its work while they are in Florida. Although they do not living within the same Florida communities, they travel to one another for meetings and events. They also host a luncheon and card party while there.
“It’s very rewarding to see the good participation in this,” Sklar said. “After all, everyone’s touched by cancer, either personally or in your family. When you see so many coming out for it, it gives you a warm feeling.”
Sobelman said, “The most rewarding part is to know they’ve found various cures for different cancers, the latest of which is prostate cancer.”
The Towers League for Albert Einstein Cancer Research will hold its next event on September 8 as it hosts a luncheon and card party at the Crest Hollow Country Club.
