MARTA VICTORIA COLN
An annoying and lingering reminder of the loss of a loved one is the seemingly endless stream of “junk mail” and other solicitations that continue to arrive in the mailbox - often for years - after a person’s death.
Now you can take direct action to stop commercial mail that continues to arrive for the departed.
In 2005, the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) created a “Deceased Do Not Contact List.” For one dollar, you can register the deceased person’s information online at https://preference.the-dma.org/cgi/ddnc.php. Or you can write to DMA at P.O. Box 1270, Carmel, New York 10512.
To register, include the name, date of death, your name, contact information and relationship to the deceased. The list is updated every three months.
The list serves to discourage fraud and the misuse of information by people who cancel mail for those who are still living. It also removes their names from companies and non-profit organizations’ marketing lists.
