How ‘s Business

By Joe Palumbo

Improve your sales skills

The highest paid professionals are entertainers, professional athletes and professional salespeople, in that order. When I attend Queens networking functions, one of the biggest concerns businesses have is their lack of sales productivity. People I talk to who are in sales tell me they are in a rut or that consumers are too smart and the world is a different place to sell goods and services in.

I have done sales training for people and businesses. Here are a few tips on taking your sales skills to the next level.

Forget “ABC” (always be closing). My motto is “ABLE” (always be listening to everything). A consumer will tell you what you need to do to close a sale. Sales people usually talk too much to show how knowledgeable they are about their service or product.

You must know your product to successfully sell, but listen twice as much as you talk. There is no substitute for presentation. Serve what is best for your prospective client, not your wallet, even if that means referring a client somewhere else.

Most importantly, I define sales as a “transfer of enthusiasm.” You have to be excited and passionate about what you are selling and what you do. How can you expect your client to get excited if you aren't? People pick up on emotions and karma. Negative karma will deflate your client, while energetic karma will make them want to do business with you.

So How's Business regarding improving sales skills? Pretend your appointments with clients are like first dates: Give your best appearance and attitude. That is what your approach and attitude should be when speaking on the phone and meeting with clients. Sales is a science that, if performed correctly, can make you financially independent.
