About two million people flocked to the Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn for the 41st West Indian Carnival Festival.
This year, the Carnival, which began on Thursday, August 28 and ended on Monday, September 1, had a “One Caribbean, Many Cultures” theme in order to celebrate the diversity and unity of the Caribbean.
The event, which attracts crowds from all over the city and the world, featured a variety of festivities, including folk dances and about 30 bands performing calypso, a Caribbean music genre which originated in Trinidad and Tobago at the beginning of the 20th century.
“This parade has spawned about 38 Mardi Gras style carnivals throughout the country,” said Yolanda Lezama-Clark, president of the West Indian-American Day Carnival Association, mentioning Atlanta, GA and Orlando, FL as examples.
